So I am a complete DIY newbie and apart from changing lightbulbs and using some spakfilla this is my first time doing anything like this.Basically I'm trying to hang up some artwork around my apartment. It's a pretty new place in a small three-storey building, constructed around 2008 and importantly for context this is in Australia. I imagine construction isn't massively different here than it is in the US but it might be worth mentioning. So I grabbed some of these and tried installing them. The first step on the packet is to push the white nylon anchor in and then use a screwdriver to get it flush with the wall. Unfortunately it only got about 10mm (0.4") in before it would just go no further. And this is the aftermath of it. Apologies for the terrible photos; phone cameras were not meant for this sort of thing...So, what the heck kind of walls do I have? My first thought was masonry since:the end of the hole is a sort of a grey colouran electronic stud finder seems to randomly find and not find studs depending on how fast I'm moving it and which way the planets are alignedtrying to find studs using the "knocking" technique seems to show studs which don't go all the way up the wallthe garages on the bottom floor have besser-brick wallssound dampening between units is better than I expectedI've only tried this on walls shared with other units and with the external wallsIs my reasoning sound? And if so what are my options for wall hooks in that case? I don't trust Command hooks because I've heard too many stories about them falling down in the middle of the night. I would prefer something less destructive since I told my landlord I'd plaster/paint over anything at the end of my lease, but I'm up for anything else. Thanks for reading! via /r/DIY http://ift.tt/2lYyh4K
