I see a lot of good advice but I don't this mentioned too much but it helped me out heaps. Most products are designed to work? Obviously. So the recommended amount is usually enough to be sure that the product will always work. So find the minimum amount required. For example, I don't see the point in putting more than half a cap of washing powder in the wash, no matter how full the machine is, my clothes always come out fresh. Shampoo (as a guy) requires half a teaspoon to clean my hair, a bottle could last me years lol. Food is a tricky one, but I find the expiry date can be exaggerated. The other day I realised the jam in my fridge expired 3yrs ago, no smell, tasted fine, texture was normal. Anything frozen can last a lifetime imo.
