I've got a HP wireless inkjet all in one and it sucks (can't print from wifi unless it's been just turned on, black printhead stopped working, doesn't always acknowledge duplex ability) and am looking to replace with a color laser printer. I'd prefer to not lose any nominal functionality, so that means

  • Duplex printing
  • Flatbed scanning
  • Wifi

Between Consumer Reports and the posts on this sub it looks like I'll want to go with a Brother model like the HL3170CDW, MFC9340CDW, or MFCL8900CDW. comparison page of relevant current CLP-AIOs

My questions are,

  • Brother owners, how's it been holding up? Your last posts were at least 7 months ago.
  • Do they work reliably over wifi? The printer is used by multiple computers and having to email stuff to a laptop that can then get close enough to connect by USB is a pain.
  • Do they work reliably with Macs? Usually things do, but just thought I'd throw this out there for the show of hands
  • Do they work reliably with Linux distros and Windows 10? grouses about the barbarians who won't program hardware-intensive mandatory software for \nix OSs*
  • Does the duplexing feature actually work every time you connect or is it greyed out half the time?
  • Is there an important distinction in terms of features or reliability between the "Digital color" and "Business color" Brother CLP-AIOs? The only thing I see is Gigabit Ethernet, and I can't tell if the Digital Color's duplex print (the main website says they all duplex print, but the comparison page linked above says only the MFC-L8900CDW does).
  • You guys also mentioned having to trick the printer into using low ink cartridges until you were ready to change them, if this can't be done on certain models I'd like to know ahead of time.

Thank you for your assistance, theinconceivable
