I'm sorry id this isnt the best place to post this.

I moved into 1 bedroom apartment last September. For the first 3 months, we didn't use the heat at all because it wasnt cold and our gas bill was less than $50. We did use the gas stove and the gas water heater.

Then in December it was in the 20s, so we turned on the heat and realized that it doesn't work. We played this weird game with our landlord and a handyman for several weeks, which ended with the landlord shrugging and offering us a space heater. During December, they were telling us to leave the gas heat on and "just wait" and we ended up with a $125 gas bill which we paid, while shivering.

So for all but the first week of January, the gas heat was off entirely and we just used the space heater, but now our bill is even higher, $135.

Heres some things that I know affected this bill:

-We've been cooking with the oven a lot (not excessively) because it warms up the apartment

-It was a longer billing cycle, by about ten days and some of those days were quite cold days

-The handyman was setting the thermostat at 80 when we weren't looking because he thought we would see results faster

-The apartment is drafty. We put up some window insulation tho.

Looking over the bill, it seems like all the charges are mostly the same and they only charged us for more gas used.

So, I guess my question is, how can my bill be so high when we didnt use the gas heat? Can we expect it to go down in the spring? Would it be worth it to call the gas company and explain all this to them? Is it something that I shoukd bring up to my landlord, even though she's useless and unresponsive?
