As a U.S. government employee, I am furloughed today. This morning, the following conversation took place between me and my 10 year old daughter:

Daughter, eating breakfast as I enter the kitchen in a t-shirt and jeans: "Why are you dressed like that? Do you not have work today?"

Me: "Nope, the government is shut down, so no work for me today. I just have to go in and sign some paperwork, and come back home."

D: "Well, that's nice, you get an extra day off work!"

M: "Not really, I'm not getting paid, and that's how we get money to buy food and live in this house."

At this point, I realized that what I just said may cause stress on my daughter, and I didn't want to cause her worry. We'll be just fine for quite a while.

M: "...but don't worry, me and mom have got this covered. You don't have anything to worry about."

D: "Because you have an emergency fund, right??!!"

My heart swelled with pride that my daughter understands what an emergency fund is, and how it can turn a financial emergency into a non-event.

So here's a shoutout to all the parents who are modelling good financial behavior for your kids. They are listening, they are watching, and it is sinking in.
