I obsessed over Craigslist and finally found a nice, freeze-the-bowl type ice cream maker with a 2nd bowl for a price I thought reasonable.
I am loving it! I get amazing ice cream, at a fraction of the price of the store bought stuff. Here is what I am enjoying about it:
-
It is really super easy! I spend about 20 minutes actively making the "batter". I leave it overnight, and then maybe 20 minutes the next day.
-
Cheaper than comparable ice cream from the store. 1 cup milk, 1 cup cream, 1-2 eggs (maybe), flavors (chocolate, fruit, etc).
-
Control over the content of the ice cream. That means I can make one with coconut milk for my lactose intolerant friend, one with less sugar, etc.
-
Control over the flavors! I made dark chocolate ice cream with chunks of tart cherry! Where else would I find that?
If you love ice cream and weren't sure, I highly recommend taking the plunge and getting yourself a nice ice cream maker!
In case you care, here is what I've made so far, 1 qt each.
-
chocolate ice cream. Simple, solid 1st go!
-
dark chocolate ice cream with tart cherry chunks
-
spiced plum ice cream (started with soaked prunes, added water, spices, etc)
-
peanut butter with chocolate fudge swirls. (Yes, I am, in fact, getting fancy)
