Hi I worked as a CSR rep working in the originations department for a large online personal lender in 2015 for a few short months and wanted to share some of what I saw working there.

  • Self-employed people usually get rejected most frequently or have their terms reduced/changed most often. Reason being that we used tax returns and a proprietary formula and not your own personally stated income. In most cases there was a sharp decrease between the income calculated by us and the customer. Normally-employed W2 customers were usually more on the money since we just used pay stubs/bank statements.

  • Best time to apply is after a full month's worth of paychecks/no days off so we could get proof your stated income is accurate since we could only go by recent history

  • Employment verifications were usually simply us just calling your boss from a work number we could verify online and asking your boss if you work there.

  • Shadiest practice there in my opinion was that after verifying everything and ready to make a decision to approve/deny we would say that your app was sent to the almighty "application review manager" who was actually one of us. This was done to deflect blame in case anyone raged for getting rejected

  • Got cut because of poor performance/wasn't cut out for working in a call center.

  • Most people were nice but I had anxiety answering phones because I was afraid of when the next upset caller might queue into me.

  • Office was terribly micromanaged so I don't think I could stand working there long. Not sure what the job duties of team leads were other than to answer questions I had while working but they were always chatty and never had to answer phones or process apps.
