It might seem overly "hippie" but they are so seriously nice to use. It's economical, eco-friendly, less to bring home, and super comfortable. It doesn't completely replace toilet paper because we just use them for liquids, but it does cut down the need by 90%.

Most wipes I've seen are made from flannel or some other thin material. I've never seen it done with terrycloth. Definitely because it's a difficult fabric to work with due to the mess, but it was worth it for years of comfy use.

Making them was almost therapeutic. You definitely need a sewing machine and some good scissors if you're going to do this. A single towel made a surprising amount of wipes. We got two towels to make them and only needed one. These will likely last years. For a total of $8. Free if you already have a towel.
