so I had tires put on my car several months ago and they said I needed ball joints and tie rod ends. the shop quoted me 1,300 dollars to do those. well I waited several more months. I knew my car was getting worse so I ordered parts from online a lot cheaper. the day the parts came my car decided the CV half shaft was done and broke. so It was time to pull my car apart and fix it myself. the plan was to replace ball joins and tie rod ends. a quick 54 dollars in parts I put on myself and take it to the shop and have them do an alignment for 80 bucks. well that didn't turn out the way I wanted it to.
My CV shaft broke so that was 60 buck extra. So I started pulling my car apart. Brake and rotor looked fine. So didn’t need to buy any part there. Went to pull the other side of the car apart and the Other cv shaft was about to go also. So another 60 bucks. And I continued on getting the car all apart. Lower ball joints on a Subaru are "fun" if they have been in there for years. So long story short the original ball join on my 230k mile Subaru was rusted in there so bad I wasn’t going to get it out. So I had to find a new splindle. Another 53 bucks I wasn’t planning on. So I get new spindle from junkyard and new drive shafts at local auto part store because I wasn’t waiting for them to be shipped from online store. While at the local parts store I buy new sway bar links another 40 bucks but my car needed them. I rented tools from the parts store. It was deposit for the tool and got all the money back when I returned the tools. So I put my car back together. That went pretty smooth. Went to drop it off at the auto shop to have them do alignment on the car. They ran a special for a Forever alignment. So I spent 203 buck now and never have to pay for alignment again at that chain auto shop again on my car

267 in parts
203 dollar for forever alignment. Total of 470 dollars for cv shaft, ball joints inner and out tie rods, and sway bar links.

Shop wanted to charge me 1300 dollars just for a couple tie rod and ball joints.

So I saved close to 2 grand by doing it myself for the parts I did replace. Now there was a lot of curse words at my car. I had to get out my big hammer for one ball joint but I got my car fixed for a lot less than what I shop would have charged.
