Hi guys!
I work part time as a cashier for a Canadian department store in Ontario. I’ve been there 3 and a half years and this issue has come up every time minimum wage has gone up but this time I actually want to do something about it.
Employees get a 10c raise once their 3 month “probation” period ends and then get a 10c raise after every year they work there. I am supposed to be making 40c over minimum wage because I’ve been working there for 3 and a half years. But every time the minimum wage goes up, our pay gets reset to the minimum. I’ve never mentioned it to anyone before just because I’m scared I’ll get fired or something but now I’ve got a second job working more hours at a better pay so I’m not worried about losing the cashier job. Because minimum wage goes up once a year, I’ve never been paid more than 10c over minimum wage. It’s just annoying that I’ve been there almost 4 years and my pay is the same as the new hires that I’m training.
Is this allowed? Can they cancel the raises we earned just because minimum wage goes up higher than what our previous pay was including the raise? Or should those raises be carried over?
Thanks!
