Good way to avoid some debt is to buy a clep study guide book. Most universities have a list of courses you can test out of. My University it costs 110$ to take the clep test and if you pass you get the credit for the course without taking it. You can knock out a solid majority of first and second year courses taking this path for a fraction of the cost of taking the actual class. If you are willing to study and read on your own you can save yourself a lot of money and time.

A good way to do this is for people who don't have time this semester to sit in class or who are taking a semester off you can still use that time to learn and accumulate credits without actually being enrolled in anything. I'm doing this now for degree #2 as well as for a future MBA.
