I have a good relationship with my parent, and I'm putting together some research to make sure they are in a good spot with their money.

If your rate of return - rate of inflation = 2% (or god forbid less) then half the realized gains are lost in fees. Since my parent is nearing retirement, they are more invested in risk adverse funds: my concern is whether it is likely that the broker's fees are jeopardizing their retirement age. In fact my parent told me their broker told them that, "retirement isn't a biblical principle". That aside, is that number competitive in the market?
