With the government shutdown here, I asked my parents how they planned to get by until they are retroactively paid. My dad is a government contractor and also receives military retirement pay. My mom said, “Well, I guess the rent is going unpaid.” My parents have never been good with money, don’t have savings, eat out at least four times a week, live in a relatively expensive rental house and have four cars, three of which are luxury vehicles that they are making payments on.
This was a reminder to me why I’m working hard to get rid of at least 50% of my credit card debt this year, build up my emergency fund from the measly $1,000 that it’s currently sitting at, and put myself on better financial footing for the future. So thanks to this subreddit for providing advice and support in my personal finance journey!
