What are some of your attempts at frugality that turned out to be false economies, so maybe we can learn from each other's mistakes?

Mine include:

  • Huge tube of cheap toothpaste that was so gross I couldn't use it
  • Skimping on visits to the the dentist (catastrophic)
  • Buying little things on sale for when I needed to give gifts. I knew they were cheap and impersonal so I never wanted to give them to anyone and after keeping them for a couple of years, ended up giving them to charity
