I know this isn't feasible for everyone but I've been doing this for years. I simply turn off the heaters breaker in the box in my garage on the way out the door. Your tank constantly turns off and on to maintain the temperature it's set at. Nobody needs hot water when we're out at work all day and all night when we're asleep. I save literal hundreds a month on my electric bill. They do sell water heater timers but they're upwards of $50 and take time to install. I get home from work, flip it back on and get a hot shower in 45 minutes.
