A very basic understanding I have of the S&P 500, Dow, Russell, etc., is that they are all combinations of some of the biggest companies as far as assets/liabilities/overall power of the company.

This doesn't mean those companies are profitable or even indicates their returns have been great historically, right?

Is there an index that does this? An index that follows companies which have had the best returns over the last 5 years? 10 years? 25 years?

This is hard to Google and it's why I go here first. Thanks!
