Expectant father here in need of an EDC bag. I am having a tough time narrowing it down, so I thought I would ask here for feedback suggestions.
Things I will be carrying:
- iPad Pro 10.5 inch (10" x 7" x .5")
- Panasonic G85 Mirrorless Camera with 20mm Pancake Lens (about 5" x 3.75" x 3.5")
- Assortment of chargers and cables
- Backup battery pack (3.5" x 2.5" x 1")
- Leatherman Charge with bit set
- Small medical kit (5” x 7” x 2”)
- Extra diapers for baby
- Wipes for baby
- Change of clothes for baby
- Bottle for baby
- Pacifier and misc odds and ends for baby
- Dads out there, what other things am I missing?
- Optional: Surface Book 2 (12.5" x 9.5" x 1")
I want something BIFL quality that doesn't scream tactical and also doesn't scream mom/diaper bag so it will be useful for years to come as an EDC bag. Prefer something in sling pack or messenger bag configuration, not backpack. Cost isn't the primary issue, I will spend what I need to spend. Some level of weatherproofing would be nice, but I don't need to take it swimming in the lake with me. Being able to get to things quickly and easily with one hand would be helpful, especially the camera. Doesn't have to fit my Surface Book but could be helpful in a pinch. I switched from smartphone to flip phone recently to rid myself of social media distractions, but must have the iPad for when things come up for work on the go.
A few bags I have seen that seem to have potential:
- Saddleback Leather Medium Waxed Canvas Gear Bag (+) Possibly perfect size, seems more ergonomic and durable than Filson, lifetime warranty, buckle opens with one hand (-) very expensive but not a deal breaker, no internal organization
- Saddleback Leather Waxed Canvas Indiana Gear Bag (+) same as above (-) possibly too small?
- Filson Medium Field Bag (+) high quality and roomy (-) less ergonomic than SBL, seems feminine, buckles difficult or impossible for one handed opening
- Maxpedition Incognito Duo (+) size looks pretty ideal, heard good things about quality, price is lower (-) somewhat tactical looking
- Maxpedition Wolfspur (+) multiple pockets look handy, price is lower (-) mixed reviews, somewhat tactical looking
- Direct Action Small Messenger (+) size looks great (-) unsure of quality, somewhat tactical looking
Any comments from experience with any of these bags or their makers? Any bags you would suggest that I am missing.
