I know some people have their favorites and some like to bash on the rest, so to come at it a different way, which brand have you had a bad experience with and wouldn't buy again? They're supposedly both good brands so I'm looking for people who have bad experiences with them, general reliability failures like drills falling apart, motors burning out prematurely, batteries failing etc.

I'm looking at 18v drill and driver combo, specifically the DCD996 drill and DCF887N driver from DeWalt and the M18 FPD drill and M18 FID driver from Milwaukee. Both drill and driver from both companies are brushless and have metal gearboxes. I'll also be looking adding a few tools later on, such as an impact wrench and an angle grinder at the very least.

I'll be using the drill for mostly metal drilling, with some wood and maybe the odd bit of masonry (I've got a dedicated 24v masonry drill). The driver will be used mostly for undoing and redoing bolts and screws on machine panels / steel work / vehicles (I won't be overstressing it buy trying to undo seized bolts either, I'll use my air impact for that before I purchase a high torque battery impact). It'll be used for driving in screws into wood / metal too and both DeWalt and the Milwaukee are more than capable of that in the videos I've watched, and the Milwaukee has a nice self tapping feature for sheet metal.

So, how do both brands hold up over time? I know anything cordless isn't going to be a buy for life item persee, but I'd be looking for a relatively long lifespan, and whichever one I choose I'll be adding more tools from the range over the next year or so, so I want to invest in a reliable brand. Milwaukee has the longer warranty, has anyone had to return a drill after say 4 1/2 years and the warranty not been honoured?

It's also worth noting that I've looked into other brands such as Ridgid but they're not widely available where I am (UK), where both DeWalt and Milwaukee are.

Cheers!
