To clarify, I am only 17, and I was 16 when the first part of this long question/story started. My father and I have not had the best relationship for the past few years since his wife tends to be a bit on the controlling side, and his trip to rehab hasn't helped.
Last year, I filed my taxes for the first time. Shortly after I got my refund check, my father and stepmother tried to contact me claiming that I filed my taxes wrong and they need redone. They tried to claim that I would be audited and that I could go to prison for doing my taxes incorrectly, my boss reassured me that as long as I filed my taxes as a dependent that I have nothing to worry about. We talked with a friend of my mother's, and she said that my father and stepmother could be trying to commit fraud by shoveling some of their income through mine, a common and very illegal tactic. Right now, my father is trying to do the same thing, and technically this is the last year he can since I will be turning 18 next year. He claims that because he pays child support, I have to file my taxes under him in a very specific manner. Does anyone have any advice as to whether he is right or if he and my stepmother is trying to commit fraud?
