My father is 73 years old, and currently has an IRA valued at $139k. 2 of the last 3 months, his IRA lost value, he's confused since the market is at all-time highs.
The worst performing security was a unit trust which pays a 9.9% dividend. I'm assuming that nothing can pay a dividend that high and sustain it's equity value, and the equity has lost about 20% of its value in the last 6 months?
Are these investments known to depreciate when the market is rising? Or are these tools used simply to pay fixed income for retired folks until they're worthless?
MLPCHX is the exact investment. Trying to determine if he needs better portfilio management.
Thanks for any help. I'm a good buy-and-hold investor in my own life, but I'm 32 and I know very little about retirement income vehicles like this. Thanks for any help.
