I already have the most basic of basic wifi packages, ~$40 a month. I don't have a landline right now but I want to go back (at least for a while) to "simpler times" and only have a home phone. No cell, no wifi, nothing fancy.

But my internet provider's basic landline plan is, well, ~$40 per month. Obviously this is ridiculous, and I can't help but assume that it's so expensive because the telecom industry can't datamine my life as easily thus they stupify the pricing to deter customers.

I'm a pessimist.

I imagine paying like $10 a month for a basic home phone. I want a physical, honest-to-god answering machine. I want to be unreachable if I'm not at home.

Should I be contacting, I dunno, AT&T or some other phone-line company? Assume I'm really ignorant because I am. I'm 30 years old and I'm almost entirely unplugged from tech and this might be my last foot out the door - any help or guidance would be much appreciated!
