Hi, it’s my first post here and I already saw some good advice in this sub so I give it a try.
So I have been working at a popular computer/smartphone company for 2/3 years now. My job is mostly operational tasks in store, managing the stocks, deliveries, shipping and whatnot. I work 25hours per week and it’s a good balance for me because it allows me to work on music which is another source of income but very not steady.
Basically I have been hired at a very low salary level and I know that some other colleagues have a slightly better salary than mine. Recently I have put a lot of efforts into my job and I have been thanked for that. Then I had my review last week during which I wanted to talk about my salary. It started well and my manager was happy about my increasing quality of work so I thought it was a good omen to mention the money but then he started bringing up that I was late 5 times during the last month... It’s true I was late but it was mainly because some of my very early shifts (imagine I start at 7am) imply that someone has to come and open the store for me and some lazy manager don’t want to wait. So they wait until 6:45 and then close the door and get into the back office. If I miss them, they make me wait even longer before opening the door so I punch in slightly after 7am. Hence the 5 times I was noted late even if I wasn’t. Anyway, these are the stupid rules I have to comply with.
So I felt immediately uneasy to ask anything and all of a sudden, the fire alarm went off. The entire store had to evacuate, and my review couldn’t be finished as expected.
I have to mention as well that, among the members of my team, I am one of the most reliable ones. I never called in sick, always showed up for work even when I felt tired (and it’s a demanding job !) and when my manager asked for a last minute change in my shift (because another colleague was absent) I always said yes to make it easier for the team. I am always giving 100% of my energy in my job but I just feel that it’s not rewarded properly. All the sacrifices I make don’t seem worth it when my salary is still pretty much the same. Every year they give everyone something like a 2% raise but it just doesn’t change anything in reality.
The problem I have is that I have never asked for a raise ever in my life and I don’t know how I could bring the subject tactfully. Do you think I have a little chance to get it or should I just forget about it ? I really am unsure...
Thanks for your help
