I have recently moved to California, while my wife has been here for a few months. We both have non-immigrant visas; she has been working while I am currently job hunting. We have transferred savings from our home country in hopes of building up our financial health here.

I have read helpful wikis of r/investing and r/personalfinance. We have designed a savings plan (emergency, mid-term, retirement) which are all currently in separate high yield savings accounts, with the emergency fund goal reached using our previous savings. We have no outstanding debts to our name.

I've checked, but my wife's company does not offer 401k matching. So next, we are looking to invest the mid-term and retirement funds so I looked into opening an IRA (as advised in the wiki). However, while trying to open a Vanguard IRA I found out that nonresident aliens can't open IRAs, and will need to meet some residency goals before we can do so.

Are there any ways to invest our money on our current status? Can I open trading accounts for mutual funds or the stock market? Someone has suggested getting into cryptocurrencies, or investment crowdfunding like this one but I haven't educated myself about those.

TLDR; US nonresidents can't open an IRA, what are alternative ways to begin investing?

Note: Throwaway account
