My SO and I are looking to go on a short vacation during the time between Christmas and New Years. This is because I recently got a huge promotion and we want to celebrate by spending a few days away from the dreary, god-forsaken Midwestern city we live in. The promotion came with a huge pay raise, but that windfall for the first several pay checks was used to pay off all of my student loans (hooray!), so the budget is still limited at the moment.
Our initial two thoughts were to rent a cabin in the Smoky Mountains or spend a few days in NYC, but we realized quickly that this gets expensive fast around the holidays. We're looking to spend around $1,000 including travel, lodging, etc.
Any other thoughts that are within driving distance of the Midwest?
