Not sure if this is a dumb question or not so I'll give it a whirl and see if I get flamed.

I'm an extreme novice when it comes to investing. I have my work retirement account and a brokerage account where I make my own buy/sell decisions.

I'd like to make some serious money in the future and am looking to broaden my portfolio.

I started looking at mortgage backed securities after learning about them in the "big short". I figure we're probably a long way out from another housing crisis and that those would be safe bets. Then it got me to thinking about student loan debt. I see that it is possible to buy student loan backed securities, but considering the staggering number of defaults in student loan debt it made me wonder if shorting student loan backed securities is the next "big short". Is there money to be made here?
