I am 36 years old with about $350 in my bank account and roughly $3500 in 401k. I make $24/hr as an apprentice carpenter. My rent is $1200/month, and I also set aside $400/month to pay storage, car insurance, and credit card bills. My total debt across all accounts is about $2000.

Currently my fiancé, son, and I are renting a one bedroom cottage. While it was ok when my son was younger, he is growing too fast and the place is just way to small for the three of us. I thought about the idea of how possible it would be to buy a house at my age and current financial situation, and it really just seems impossible. I really want my son to have a place he can call home because life dealt him (and us) a card that's been hard to handle (he is severely autistic). That said, it's been quite expensive to meet the demands of caring for a child with a disability, so saving has been really hard for us.

Are we destined to rent for the rest of our lives? It's heartbreaking to see my son struggle with life and the one place he finds comfort is at home, yet it's not really our home and we surely can't afford one. Any thoughts/ideas/insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.
