So I am moving from New England to the midwest for a nice job opportunity. I received a few grand as part of a relocation package from the company, but would like to minimize how much I use from it so that I could save the rest of it, put it towards a car, put it towards loans, etc.
I currently do not own a car, but was considering buying one before I move. My reasoning behind this was because a car could fit most of my stuff inside and I can bring the bare essentials like a mattress, basic furniture, a tv, all my clothes, etc. I will be moving into a studio so I don't need to bring much. Just enough to survive off of and have some entertainment items. The area I'm moving to also has really bad public transport so a car is a necessity, and if I rush to buy a car there I also worry I'll end up with a shitty car that might need repair work in the future, since I'm on a low budget and WILL need a car to commute to work.
My parents advised me against this because they said it would be much more expensive to register and insure a car in our state (CT) and that I should wait until I move to the midwest(MO) to buy a car. Their recommendation was that I fly out with 2 suitcases full of stuff, uber and public transportation until I find a car, and then they'd ship some more of my stuff to my apartment. My worry with this is that I won't be able to bring much with me (last time I traveled I had 1 suitcase of clothes, so another piece of luggage surely wouldn't be able to carry all my other essentials, and I'd rather not buy things I already have back home). And while I don't mind living frugal, sleeping on the floor or buying an air mattress for a while, as well as living in a mostly empty apartment, would be slightly depressing and I'm not sure how much it would cost or how feasible it would be to have some of my bigger items shipped to me (tv, mattress, furniture). If I end up buying a lot when I move I'm not sure if I'll be saving much money this route, but I am also ignorant about cars and don't know if the extra payment for living in New England will be a one-time expense or a recurring expense if I insure it here.
I also looking into renting a car or moving truck but those options seem to run around $1500 (possibly not including gas costs in the estimate) which is a large sum in of itself, and I don't really think I need a moving truck full of stuff.
It's just a really stressful situation all around for me and am hoping you guys can give me some advice. Thanks in advance.
