You probably read the title and thought "this kid is wasting his money"

Yeah, I know. I can't think of a decent subreddit to kinda discuss my frugal mindset so I'm here.

I have an iPhone 6 that I've had for a couple years. It's in great condition still, no cracks, works alright. I've been talking about upgrading my iPhone to a 7 so that I can enjoy better photography, as that's a hobby of mine. I like the easy accessibility a mobile camera has in comparison to an actual camera. I also feel like this would be a good time for an upgrade as my phone might become obsolete with how Apple runs their products..

My option is this; a tech friend who works in the cellular business is offering to sell me his iPhone 7+ for $250 + my old iPhone 6. He plans on getting the X, and can get it cheaper if he can trade in a 6. He's done the math and I've done mine. I'm short on cash, but can manage to pay the $250 either with a down payment and the rest as I gather money from selling blood plasma ($70/w). This would be a tight decision as I'm also in the process of purchasing a cheap laptop, another great investment.

I'm in need of some discussion on how I should approach this. I know the best option is "keep your phone, it's not broken, no need to replace it" and the more obvious "just buy a cheaper, newer, phone"

Staying on topic of strictly me purchasing this newer iPhone now at a greater discount than anywhere, what would you recommend? I'm also factoring in the idea of having to buy the headphone jack dongle, (however I think it's included), and the value of time in which if I wait now, and my phone suddenly does become bad, I'd be forced to purchase a phone that's more expensive than this opportunity.
