Im a HS senior in WA and have always had a not-great-homelife. A short while after turning 18 I was kicked out of my house allowing me to file as a homless independent on my fafsa. I have a friend who goes to UW as an independent and they have it almost completely paid by fafsa (0 income filed). This sounds great but im working for 14/h 45 hour weeks. Because im staying with my friend I have almost no expenses and plan to have almost 20k saved before going off to college. But then sophmore year ill have to file that I have 20k in my bank account on fafsa. Will this make it so fafsa wont pay for my schooling? Is there a way to hide the money? If I just have all the money hidden in a safe will I still be penalized for having that 20k even if the bank records show I have “none” of it? Thank you so much for the help.
