I have a few long term accounts where I'll hold a position for a years if not decades, only adjusting positions every year or two in order to balance the account to my goals.

However, for the past year I've open an active trading account, where I hold positions for a week or less. However, sometimes you make a wrong call and the your stuck with a stock at the wrong price. The stock hasn't tanked, but the capital is tied up from making the next move.

Usually what are some of the strategies when one is in this position? Exit out immediately? Wait a few months? Sell options against your position to get a little cash flow going? Should I be concerned about the January effect for my positions?

Basically what are some guidelines some of the more experience traders do in these situations.
