My mother and brother are under disability income. I am 21 in community college surviving off of my financial aid refunds every semester. If I work, section 8 adjusts our rent. My payments are roughly $400/m on car payment and insurance combined. I found it easier to get better grades in classes when I'm not working but since I'm nearing transfer to university.. I am wondering how can I go about being independent. If I get a paid internship or job now, section 8 will adjust our rent again.
I've talked to my mother about this and she thinks I should wait until I graduate community college and then use a friends address because it could affect my FAFSA. Then I can look for a job and save up money to get my own place. The only problem here is if I'm out of section 8, then it would be "illegal" for me to stay with my parents since I would be out of the lease.
How can I go about being independent? I feel that section 8 is nothing but a trap and constricts your income.
