As the title says. I'm in Georgia, and there are no consumer protections that I can find regarding the sale of used cars. This car was bought at a dealership.
It ran fine until 3 weeks ago when it suddenly just decided not to start. Fast forward to this morning, they've replaced a whole bunch of stuff but it still won't start. The dealership wants to do a full body harness replacement, which is basically all the wiring in the car. It will cost $12,000 on top of the $5000 in repairs they've already done.
The warranty company has agreed so far to pay the $5k, but they don't know about the body harness yet. I am 99% sure they will deny it. The rep at the dealership also said that the warranty company threatened not to cover any repairs at all if the dealership called back a 3rd time (and this is the 3rd time).
I am left with the following options:
1. Allow the warranty company to pay the $5k, tow a dead car home and.. I have no idea. We have no other car.
2. Try to get the warranty company to cover the $12k harness only but pay the previous $5k out of pocket (my most attractive option right now)
3. The warranty company says no to everything, the dealership takes temporary possession of my car until a $17k lien is paid off (dealership rep informed me this will happen if we can't pay, which we can't)
I am absolutely amazed that it is legal to sell a $20k piece of equipment with no recourse if that car was a lemon, used or not. A $20k high end piece of equipment shouldn't fail after 2 months, and if it does there should be hell to pay.
Are there any other options here I haven't considered? Or could I actually end up owing $19k on a car that doesn't run until I either pay $17k to fix it or sell it for scrap? My head is spinning right now.
