So I had an in-line heater that worked great for 2 years. Yesterday it malfunctioned, heating my tank up to 100+ degrees with disastrous results. I'm devastated, but want to rebuild. And the creatures that did survive will still need some form of heating as it's winter. They have an emergency heater, but I want to build an override device. I am wondering if something like the following would work:A copper wire that rests in the tank, which runs down to the thermometer itself (I know they already sell variants of this), and where the thermometer is integrated with some sort of electrical switch box that plugs into the electrical outlet. This switch box would power both the thermometer and the heating device. If the thermometer notes a temp of over say, 86 deg, ideally it'd be able to flip a switch in the box, shutting off the power to one or both devices.I've looked around but haven't found anything like this for fish tanks. Surely something like this must have been created for other purposes. I just don't know where to start. I'm grateful for any help!! via /r/DIY http://ift.tt/2AUpAOC
