I have looked at my own portfolio compared to indices across Europe. I have broken down returns/loss for each purchase and visually (though not artistically) looked at when a stock was purchased/sold on each stock' historical chart.
In short my investment philosophy has been to buy businesses I understand (or think I understand, have a few failures too) that are somewhat large and a nice dividend hiatory. I never have more than 10 stocks, and current portfolio is 5 different stocks.
Short story is my return: 9.5% p.a (including transaction costs)
Osebx (Norways version of S&P-500): 10.6% excluding transaction costs) And this is with some pretty good entry points for myself too. I definitely face more volatility than OSEBX as well, so you could say I take on more risk for lower returns.
Can put up a more detailed post if there is any interest
