First of all - my state has a public university that is very well-regarded for what I want to do (physics, maybe engineering). If I get in, I'll qualify for a full-tuition scholarship because of my GPA - the only thing I'll have to pay for is textbooks and about $2000 in mandatory fees. Another draw for me is that they accept AP credit; I've gotten 5's (top score) on all 6 exams I've taken so far, and am taking 7 more in the spring. If I get 5's on all of those, I'll be done with my first three semesters. This means I can fit my bachelor's and master's into four years - which benefits me because I'll be able to apply my scholarship to both degrees. Thankfully, it doesn't look like I'll have to take out much money - if any - in student loans.
My parents have agreed to take on up to $15,000 a year. I also plan on working part-time during the year and full-time during the summer, if possible. I want to put a lot of this toward things like a house fund and retirement savings (it's never too early to start!!).
If I live in a dorm, I have to buy the meal plan, which is way overpriced. On the other hand, a dorm is less expensive than a one-bedroom apartment in that area. I'm considering splitting a two- or three-bedroom apartment with a roommate or roommates...
TL;DR How can I minimize my living expenses as a college student in the city in order to save as much money as possible?
