I'm at risk for Huntington's disease. It's a neurodegenerative disease that is basically Parkinsons and Alzheimers put into one. Symptoms usually begin to manifest between 30-50 years, I'm currently 27.
I am planning to get genetically tested to see if I am positive. I will be private-paying for the entire testing process as I'm concerned for my current health insurance to know. The US healthcare is such in flux, it worries me, this being a potential pre existing condition and the ramifications that thereof. I'm simply trying to protect my family as much as possible if I am positive. I have two dependents, my wife and our child. I make 106k in a medium/low cost of living area. If something happens to me, we/my wife could get by on much less if we were to move back near our families in the midwest.
I'm interested in getting long term care insurance and life insurance now, before I'm tested. They can't deny me if I'm tested after the policy is enacted, correct?
As this could be a long-term health issue, I'm thinking term life insurance might not be the best idea as I'll have to re-up after the term expires and I could be HD positive, causing them to deny me.
If I'm negative, I can re-evaluate and cancel the policies afterward. Seems like a win-win situation?
My Questions:
- How much life insurance should I get?
- Any recommendations for who to get it through, etc?
- What should I look out for with life and long term care insurance?
