Getting started on the largest DIY I have ever had to do. Had just purchased the components to do a total remodel on the bathroom. Was actually looking forward to that. Then house was struck by an earthquake. Not that earthquakes are common in southern Michigan, but its the best way to describe the condition of my house. Actual cause: hit and run to the electric pole connected by wires to my house. All of the plaster on the main and second floor is cracked with ceilings in some rooms waiting to fall. My kitchen was the worst, with the cabinets falling from the walls and the microwave crashing through the stove top. That was the scene my youngest came home from school to. Glad that my parents had not just dropped her off that day but came in with her....Then we get to the insurance adjuster. I'm certain Satan has a special place in hell for these people!! Due to the age of the house (110+ old Victorian) the plaster has to be depreciated. The cost of depreciated is certainly not the cost of replacing the plaster walls, even with drywall. That's not even considering trying to salvage all the wood trims. Well good luck and they will be back to inspect the work in about 4 months. Basically, my check covers the cost of a mid grade used car. So much for full coverage. And since its hunting season, contractors are next to impossible. Several have already told us that we'd be well after the holidays...Thank God for a new microwave and the grill outside or the kids would go hungry. Once this is over I will never be eating another $5 Little Ceasers Hot and Ready. So glad to get this off my mind. Didn't want to put it to my husband that way, trying to stay upbeat around here to keep the mood light. I'm sure it will all work out in the end. Just have to get things going. via /r/DIY http://ift.tt/2yF687T
