Hi everyone,

My mom passed away a year ago. We were going over some stuff and realized we have her security deposit from her apartment for $1,900.

We never went to her bank or anything bc maybe there's like $100 in there but it's probably negative money. She has nothing else in terms of values or assets.

I would like to cash this check. My sister and I can split it and will help with some Christmas presents/bills this holiday season. What's the best way to handle this? I'd also like to point out that the check is in my mom's name but addresses to my sister's new address (she moved to a 1 bedroom in the same apartment complex). Can the apartment complex change the name? They said they couldn't but I find that hard to believe since my sister was on the lease too when she passed.

Any help is greatly appreciated. You have no idea. Thanks!!

And for context: we are willing to become the "heirs of her estate" if that is what it takes. How do you start the process? We also have an estranged older brother and feel like it may be an issue without him being cooperative.
