Hello everyone, I'm a bit overwhelmed and need all the advice I can get.
I've been living in Ireland for 4 years now but due to immigration issues I have to move back to the states. While over here, I was supported by my Irish partner and as I had no intention of moving back, I closed all my accounts and moved my and my daughter' 's lives over here. Well, typical, partner and I broke up. Here's where it's not so typical.
After we broke up, things turned bad for me very quickly. I've been homeless with my 6 year old daughter since July. I have no income, receive no benefits or child support and have next to nothing to my name. An organisation called IOM is paying for flights back to the states. I have exactly one person we can stay with (childhood best friend) long term who lives in a Houston suburb.
We've already informed the local elementary school they'll be receiving a new student soon. I might receive some start up money from IOM but nothing significant. In the last 4 years, I've developed fibromyalgia (nerve pain disorder) and early onset arthritis. I have no idea what my credit ratings may look like. My friend uses a hot-spot type thing so has no Wi-Fi in house which makes working from home difficult.
So, to recap. I'm 28, a single mom of a 6 year old who receives no child support, and am starting over with 2 suitcases of stuff. My daughter will be able to take the school bus but I will have no transportation initially to be able to easily get to a job. Winter is coming and my ailments will get worse with it which makes walking a couple miles to work unfeasible. I have every intention of applying for welfare and seeing what can be done. But other than that, I'm terrified of starting over with next to nothing and need solid advice.
I'm college educated (bachelor in hospitality management) but unable to go back into my field as I'll be unable to stand for more than 2 hours at a time without a break, and my hands are arthritic. The money IOM would be providing is to go towards education or something of the sort to make a chance of being employed at a decent place simpler. I'm looking for advice from anyone who's started over with this much nothing before.
The main things I'm looking for advice on:
Banks/credit unions - advice on where to open an account as its impossible these days to go without a bank account
Transportation - has anyone ever heard of successful long term lift sharing in a place like a Houston suburb or should I save up a bit and buy a used car and insurance on the cheap for personal autonomy
Employment - I'm unsure what the hell to do in this regard when I have no way of knowing how far I'll be from any employment opportunities but need to get a job straight away
Medical care - I have 2 incurable debilitating diseases. Having them here was one thing, where I could regularly go to a Dr and afford prescriptions. I don't even want to think about how massive the difference will be in terms of my medical care
Benefits - any advice on welfare or the like. And before I'm questioned about child support, my daughter is a child of rape, there's no father listed on her birth certificate, child support isn't a possibility.
