Album with layout, wall, and attic pics: http://ift.tt/2g5LftR: We want to open the small kitchen into the old, unused dining room in our single story, hip roof house. As the foundation block walls (yellow on layout) run perpendicular to the demo wall (red arrow indication on layout), we figured it's probably a non-load bearing wall. However, the attic has me questioning everything, as I and a couple coworkers that are more knowledgeable than I can't figure out what's going on with load transfer for sure. The album steps through the various points, but a quick recap is that there is a 2x8 running over the kitchen, and partially (~1/2 on) the demo wall. This oddly jogs once it reaches the garage. There is one vertical 2x4 coming down from the roof line to a 2x8 that laterals over the to jog line above the garage, and another vertical 2x4 coming down to a couple horizontal boards, that then span over a couple ceiling joists and connect to a lateral beam running N-S from sheathing to sheathing (perpendicular to the demo wall and not over a foundation wall). Thus, theOddly enough, when they put the soffits in, they just put a piece of insulating batting there and I can look right into the wall (now with 1000% more cellulose to make room around the boards!). It almost seems like that 2x8 might be putting some of the force down through the demo wall, but I can't find any examples of a hip roof layout like that.Any thoughts? I haven't got pictures of the crawl area where the wall is (can do tonight if needed), but it's definitely perpendicular to the foundation block walls. Thanks! via /r/DIY http://ift.tt/2z3Gbh1
