I’ve been at my current job for 3 years. I was contracted for the first 3 months then they thought I was a good fit and made me permanent. During my salary “negotiations” I named an amount and my boss said “okay”. I instantly realized I could have gotten more if I had just had the courage to ask.

Fast-forward 3 years. I’ve had nothing but positive performance reviews. My boss left and I volunteered to take lead on a huge project that she headed up. Also upon her leaving I also became the sole expert on a database system of ours. I’ve taken on a lot more responsibilities as well.

I have a great relationship with my new boss (internal promotion). And it just keeps getting better because I recently returned from maternity leave and my temp replacement was a royal screwup. He was completely incompetent even though he had 20+ years experience to my 5. Since returning my boss has told me numerous times that I’m basically not allowed to leave because I’m too valuable.

I feel like there has been no greater time in the history of the world to ask for a raise. But I’ve never done it before. It’s difficult to know what my value is in terms of the rest of the market. Numbers I look at say the average salary for my title is anywhere between my exact pay and 25% more than I make. I started with more conservative percentages and now I’m considering asking for 20% (is that outrageous?) and then assuming they’ll come down a ways from that.

Any advice is appreciated.
