When my wife and I bought our house in August 2016, my father suggested that I monitor all of the utilities to see what everything was costing us. The house is a 1900 three story brick, with very little insulation on the finished third floor and just three-deep brick wall construction on the first two floors. We added insulation to the third floor and the basement last December, so I'm anxious to see the improvements for the few months of overlap we had prior to insulation being installed. So far the results are looking promising, but it hasn't gotten all that cold yet.
My parents have lived in their house for the past 28 years and Dad has utility details for 20 of those years in a spreadsheet that he can go back and see how prices have fluctuated and verify if they get a utility bill that seems abnormally large. So I used his original spreadsheet and made a few changes to make it meet my needs. I color coded a lot of items, added some conditional formatting, and added tabs for our security system and cable bill (Internet only).
Here are some screenshots of my utility tracker. I'd be happy to share a link to the actual tracker by PM, since the sub moderates out links to Google Docs. Hopefully some of you find this useful, but I'd be interested in hearing any feedback from all of you. Cheers!
