Hi everyone so I'm in Scotland, moving into a one bedroom flat for the first time and looking for any money saving tips.
Expenses so far:
- rent – £675 per month
- internet – £12.45 per month (originally £19.95 per month with TalkTalk but Quidco cash back of £90 and free installation)
- Phone – £10 or £12 per month using GiffGaff, I have a SIM only deal as my phone is unlocked.
- Transportation – free. I do not own a car and can walk most places I need to get to.
- Move in costs – need to buy loads of stuff from Amazon for this new flat as it’s not in great condition and fairly empty. Is there any way to save money cause atm my cart has nearly £400 worth of stuff.
Need help with:
- Part time job – I am a full time student so was looking at evening and weekend part time jobs.
- Energy – Bulb/Octopus/Robin Hood energy? The flat runs on electricity only and there is no gas. It’s a one bedroom flat that will be heated by electricity. Single glazed windows.
- Bank accounts – I have a current account with Bank of Scotland with no overdraft/fees/interest so it’s pretty basic. Was thinking of opening a Tesco Bank account and Nationwide FlexDirect to earn interest and use points when I shop at Tesco.
- Credit cards – Is it worth getting a cashback credit card to save money when shopping for food or high street items?
- Second hand furniture – I am browsing on Gumtree to get a free sofa and dining table but I don’t have access to a van to collect?
Any general money saving tips while living alone?
