So I'm 18 years old, and I've been using a family car for the passed 2 years. My parents use the car against me so much. I know this sounds incredibly petty but its true. Its not like I'm doing anything necessarily bad, I'm just sick of being an adult and not being able to make my own decisions for when I work, when/if I go to church, my own class schedule.. Etc. I would never even consider taking the car without permission by the way- I usually just comply with whatever they want me to do and then have permission to use it. It's getting old and its affecting me in ways I don't like.
So I've decided that I'm going to buy my own car. I have the money saved up and I'm going to be reasonable about it. I've decided to get the lowest miles, decent condition cheap Toyota sedan I can find. Around $1500-$2000 should do fine.
Holy shit why does every insurance quote I get cost more than the car itself every 6 months??? I knew insurance prices were jacked up for people in my situation (young, male, automatically a dumbass) but dang. I don't think I'll be able to afford this. I have good grades, never got a ticket or in an accident, car would have ABS, etc. Even with all those discounts my quotes have been coming up to $300+ a month.
A year or so ago I asked my dad to ask his agent for a quote on a 2002 Crown Victoria. The quotes wouldn't be exactly the same for the Toyota I guess but it cant be too far off. His agent quoted him $162. For the whole 6 months. Is it legal/advised/possible for my dad to buy the insurance and I pay him back for it? That was the plan back when I was under 18 looking at cars but I never really looked into that, and I'd probably not want to be linked to my parents in another way, no?
I can afford the car in cash, I can afford the gas, and I have a large sum saved up for emergencies and repairs. But this damn insurance is going to kill me. Any advice?
Quick edit- Both quotes mentioned in this post were state minimum required insurance. No comprehensive coverage only liability.
