I'm staining a knotty pine door that I bought from Menards, and it is not getting nearly dark enough. Our goal was something a little bit lighter than this, but so far, I'm only able to get this.I read in a lot of places that you should seal pine with a 50/50 mix of shellac/denatured alcohol to get even absorption of the stain, but I'm guessing that this is my problem. I used Zinsser® Bulls Eye Clear Shellac Finish and Sealer, and I did two coats. For Stain, I used Varathane® Premium Early American. On the first coat, I let the stain sit for about 5 minutes; for the 2nd & 3rd coats, I let the stain sit for about 15 minutes before wiping it off. When it wasn't getting dark enough, I tried Varathane® Premium Dark Walnut Gel Stain that I had left over from a different project. Is the sealer my problem? Do I need to sand the entire thing down, and start over? via /r/DIY http://ift.tt/2guorIq
