Another post was made about how someone simply made more money and it was easier than being frugal. Let's put that to the test.

My take home is a bit more than $10 an hour, but for simplicity sake, let's keep it $10 even.

Most second jobs I could get would pay me minimum and I'd only be able to handle an added 16 hours a week, after taxes my take home would be $7.28 equaling $466 more a month.

If I consider my hourly take home from the job I have now, this is what it would cost me in time for the alternative. I already...

  • $22/mo Netflix & Hulu (2.2 hours cost) VS cable $80 (8 hours cost) but it costs me 0 hours in time to choose Netflix & Hulu over cable
  • $0 on heating bill (0 hours cost) VS 8 hours of medium heat on in WA state 1000sf $177 (17.7 hours cost), costs me 2 minutes a day to layer up with blankets and clothes, so I lose an hour a month layering up. So total hours saved is 16.7
  • $75 worth of store brand food (7.5 hours cost) VS $100 worth of brand food of the same kind (10 hours cost). It takes SECONDS (or if you've already been doing it for a long time already, no time) to choose store brand over brand. So total hours saved is 2.5
  • $200 worth of groceries (20 hours cost) VS $132 groceries + 2 meals for 2 people at fast food everyday $360 ($492 total) (49.2 hours cost). It would take me 2 minutes to get into a car, 20 minutes round trip, 5 minutes to order/get food in drive-thru and 2 minutes to get home so that would be 14.5 hours every month. It takes me an hour to make dinner, so the total time saved cooking dinner and making it from scratch is 12.7.

Just these things alone saves me money and or time, money it saves me $620!! Or, it saves me 37.7 hours of working time away from my family. However, that second job that I would likely only get at minimum wage would have me working 85 more hours a month! 21.25 more hours a week!

Yes you can make more money, or you could save more money. Just make the most logical choice based on your needs. I need that time to cook and have dinner with my family, or to go home and watch some more Netflix if I want. Sometimes, what good is spending more time making more money, if you have less time to enjoy the money you're making?
