I have worked virtually from home for a large company since April. The pay leaves something to be desired, but it's quite convenient with a lot of room to move up considering it is a large, worldwide corporation. At the start of August I ended a relationship, and made the move from Kentucky, which has a state income tax, to Tennessee, which has no state income tax. The move was approved by leadership, and I changed all the necessary address information on my work portal as well as with HR. Two weeks later I started receiving emails from our payroll department asking me for updated information because my home address and payroll state were different. I immediately replied with the correct information, but this problem persisted for the next 2 months. Finally last week, after making as large of a fuss as I could without crossing any lines, this situation was remedied. My address was changed for tax purposes, and I was promised the money back for the taxes incorrectly paid to the state of Kentucky. I was told that the compensation would be applied to my next paycheck which I should have received on October 6th. Instead, yesterday when I woke up to go grocery shopping, I noticed by bank account hadn't received a direct deposit as normal. After an hour of calling, and frantically trying to find out why I hadn't been paid. I was informed that my direct deposit had been deactivated, and a check mailed to me. This is most certainly an inconvenience when you don't make much $$, and get paid bi-weekly. However it's not the end of the world. After hearing this information I log in to reactivate my direct deposit, but I see that it is still active. I then log into ADP to see if that is reflecting at least what I'll be paid. ADP doesn't show any pay check for that pay period at all. After seeing this I immediately brought it to the attention of my leadership. I was then emailed a copy of my paystub. Which showed that I worked over 200 hours in a 2 week period as well as what appeared to be a full refund of all my federal and state withholdings year to date. This check is nearly 3x what I normally receive due to at least one, if not multiple errors on behalf of the company I work for. My manager called me yesterday after all of this to tell me that since I have been over paid I will most likely have to pay all of this off in the form of not receiving a paycheck the next few pay periods. I have not received or cashed the check yet, but if and when I do should I? Is it legal for them to do this? Do I have any recourse regarding this situation? After all of this I'm not even sure if I want to continue working for the company. This has left a very bad taste in my mouth, and isn't the 1st time a very simple task has been overlooked/grossly mishandled causing me an inexcusable amount of headache.
