so im in the market for a cheapy smart phone. Ive finally left verizon after months of being in their contract clutches and would preferably get into an unlocked phone with carrier flexibility.

i found on newegg i can get a galaxy s3 for roughly 50 bucks with "freedompop" service which has pretty meh reviews. My thought process is i get the phone, use it for awhile and have them eventually unlock it, or get it an immediately unlock it myself (r/android saying its one of the most rootable/ unlockable friendly phones out there. not sure if true).

my job requires communication, and the use of maps. 500mb of data a month sounds pretty restricted, but going from no cell phone to a severely limited one doesnt sound too bad to me.

clearly i have no idea how cell phones work, please be gentle.
