
So this is a question more than anything; I bought a couple of external solar lights for the sides of my 1908 brick house and they came with some rinky-dink screws that will not secure them to brick. My first thought was to use my hammer drill but not sure they make masonry screws that small, so perhaps a mounting block out of scrap wood, then use the included screws to mount to that. The problem I keep thinking about is water getting behind the mounting block; can I just paint and caulk that? will it be enough to keep water from eventually destroying the brick? While the mounting block will be under my box gutters technically, it might be 15 or 20 feet below, so good chance to get hit with a fair amount of water.
