Wife and I have owned our current house since 2010. We're in the process of opening an HELOC to get some work done, and the bank told us they need more information about a lien found on the property. I explained there are none and the only lien would be the primary mortgage (which is the same bank). The only information she gave was that it was a child support lien and initially brushed it off as "these things happen" and said their research would get to the bottom of it.
It's now been two weeks and they're still working on it, though this time when she contacted me she used the word "liens". Our initial mortgage was in 2010. In 2012 we got a HELOC through another bank and they found a 25 year old lien that the primary mortgage missed. We had that discharged and got the HELOC. In 2015 we refinanced everything with our current bank, so they would have to have been satisfied when they took the mortgage at that time.
This concerns me that at least one lien was put against our property without either of us knowing. We've been through our credit reports and everything there is correct. My question is how could this happen without us knowing, and what information can I request from the bank to divulge information on these liens?
